Overview of Spark Plasma Sintering

Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) also called Field Assisted Sintering Technology (FAST) or Direct Current Sintering (DCS), is a sintering technique that can produce highly dense materials. 

The main difference between FAST / SPS and more conventional powder processing techniques is its heating method. The Spark Plasma Sintering process consists of a high intensity pulsed current that passes through a graphite tooling. With this set-up it is possible to reach high heating and cooling rates of over 100°C/min

The Spark Plasma Sintering process can reach high temperature in a few minutes compared to several hours for other sintering techniques.

The spark plasma sintering (SPS) process is highly effective for sintering highly refractory materials that are difficult to densify with traditional techniques. These technology like natural sintering, Hot Pressing (HP) or Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) might keep a coarse microstructure and limited performances.
